Obama endorses new rules for brokers giving retirement advice

President Barack Obama called on the Department of Labor to crack down on the "backdoor payments" and "hidden fees" paid to brokers giving retirement advice. The president endorsed a new rule proposed by the Labor Department on Monday that would increase the standards for brokers who recommend investments for retirement accounts, requiring brokers to have the client's best interests in mind.

A union representing public service workers has filed a grievance against the East Haven Board of Education claiming it used a private security company to fill a vacant position. According to a report in the New Haven Register, the United Public Service Employees Union claims the board dealt with a staffing issue, by hiring someone who was not a member of the United Public Service Employees Union.

Alaska's minimum wage will rise Tuesday to $8.75, a $1-per-hour increase that will affect thousands of workers' paychecks, according to the state's Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Paramus man faces seven years in prison for jobless-benefits fraud

A Paramus man pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy and theft charges for leading a criminal scheme in which he and three other men stole more than $180,000 from the state by filing false claims for unemployment benefits, Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said. The three co-defendants pleaded guilty in December to charges stemming from a plot to file seven fraudulent unemployment insurance claims, including two that used false identities, Hoffman said.
