The US Supreme Court ruled this month, in a unanimous decision, that time employees spend waiting in line to pass through security screening checks after clocking out but before leaving the workplace is not "work time," and is therefore not compensated under the Fair Labor Standards Act . The ruling reversed the Ninth Circuit's position that the time should be compensated because the security checks were a necessary component to the principal work performed by the employees and were done for the employer's benefit.
