Prominent Financial Firm Shuts Downtown Offices; Managers 'Operating Virtually From Their Homes'

Smith Whiley & Co., a Connecticut financial services firm that once handled tens of millions of dollars in state pension fund investments, got a $350,000 state economic development deal in 2012 on the condition that it add jobs to its payroll - but now it has cleared out of its downtown Hartford offices. Also, the company was fined $1,800 last year by the state Department of Labor for failing to pay wages to six employees, labor department spokeswoman Nancy Steffens said.
