They're beginning to hire and train what's expected to be their largest seasonal workforce since 1999 -- to handle an anticipated 4.1 percent increase in holiday sales, according to the National Retail Federation and Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement consulting firm. Local retail employment has increased by an average of 975 jobs each October through December since 2010, according to Ashley Kobal, an analyst for the state Department of Labor & Industry.
