Consider Pros and Cons of Drug and Alcohol Testing

Research shows 9.7 percent of Americans smoke marijuana before going to work, said Jim Reidy, an attorney with Sheehan Phinney Bass and Green in Manchester, N.H., speaking March 24 at the Society for Human Resource Management's 2015 Employment Law & Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Reidy opened a session on drug and alcohol testing with that alarming statistic, along with two others: Another recent survey shows that approximately 14 million people-about 10 percent of the U.S. workforce employed either full- or part-time, abuse alcohol and/or drugs. And the U.S. Department of Labor estimates the costs of drug use and abuse in the workplace at $75 billion to $100 billion per year.
