When the economy took a hit in 2009, the Big Island saw an 8.8 percent unemployment rate at the beginning of the year, which then grew to a 11.2 unemployment rate by June. The economy finally started to recover in 2012, when the unemployment rate dropped to 6.6 percent that December.
