Ex-Trenton judge accused of extorting $17K from immigrants seeking legal work status

TRENTON - Former Trenton municipal court Judge Renee Sumners is facing federal criminal charges alleging she extorted $17,550 from immigrants seeking to work legally in the United States. Sumners created fake letters from the U.S. Department of Labor claiming that the three victims, who were all seeking to obtain legal status to work in the United States, owed the federal government money for various fees and charges, according to a federal criminal complaint filed last month.
