Deputy sues Butte County Sheriffa s Office for racial discrimination

OROVILLE >> A Sheriff's deputy is suing the Butte County Sheriff's Office for alleged racial harassment, discrimination and retaliation when he reported the incidents. Michael Sears, a “half-black and half-white” deputy hired in June 2007, filed a lawsuit March 16 against two of his superiors, Butte County and the Sheriff's Office itself, alleging other deputies and his immediate superiors participated in and failed to prevent discrimination and harassment that included the use of a racial epithet, questions regarding Sears' and his son's racial identity, and incidents involving being compared to both a hanging stuffed animal and photos of arrested African-Americans.
